HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY TIMELINE

One invention that I was really surprised with was the Camera Obscuras. I did not know the very first recorded photographers were artists. It makes me wonder how they learned to draw, and how long it would take to complete one image. I also wonder if their photos were colored. I was also impressed with Nicephores photosensitive paper. That is what started everything in order to capture a permanent image. I am also impressed with Henry Fox Talbot’s permanent negative images and positive images. Because of that, Mathew Brady and staff were have to cover the American Civil war, exposing 7000 negatives. One event in photography history was when Lewis Hine was hired by US National Child Labor Committee to photograph children working mills. It exposed hard working children, which made a change because of the photos. I find it super cool how pictures went from negative, to positive, to already finished throughout history. I like to think how many pictures tried out color back in 1936 when development of Kodachrome started.

For today, modern day photography is able to show everything in the world. If you wanted to look at places like Egypt, you would google it and see how the amazing photos taken by photographers who traveled the world. It impacted my life because I can easily search up anything I want and be able to see it. From very amazing places to every species of animal, I could look at a image of it and imagine what it could be like. I also take plenty of pictures myself. Being able to capture a moment is very special to me because looking at a image takes me back to that exact day. It’s hard to remember a day a long time ago, but a physical image makes it that much more easy to remember the whole day.

POP ART

Berlyn

Pop art is an art movement of drawing inspiration from sources in popular and commercial culture. Berlyn’s artwork is considered popart because they chose our high school football, which is a form of our culture, and gave it a “pop”. The visuals and feel of the image makes the art pop out, thus making it popart. Berlyn does beautiful and highly skilled photography work for Jurupa hills. I chose this image becuase I liked how you could see the school’s name behind the filters and texture. I like the bright colors, and the image was perfect for this assignment.

100 MOST INFLUENTIAL IMAGES OF ALL TIME

The Burning Monk, Malcolm Browne, 1963The Burning Monk, Malcolm Browne, 1963.  During a time of outrage, two monks doused a seated elderly man with gasoline. The seemingly serene monk sitting lotus style was enveloped in flames, and the photo became the first iconic image to emerge from a quagmire that would soon pull in America.

This image catched my attention as it is a monk engulfed in flames, with no one helping, and the monk not seeming to care.

Lunch Atop A Skyscraper, 1932Lunch Atop A Skyscraper, 1932. It’s the most terrifying yet joyful lunch break ever captured: 11 men casually eating, chatting and sneaking a smoke as if they weren’t 840 feet above Manhattan with nothing but a thin beam keeping them alive. These brave men are among the construction workers who helped build Rockefeller Center. But the picture, taken on the 69th floor of the flagship RCA Building, was staged as part of a promotional campaign for the massive skyscraper complex.

I like this photo because of the extreme danger these men are in. They all seem to be causal, and enjoying their lunch not caring about the long fall below them. This photo also makes you wonder what these men may be talking about with the white papers in their hand.

Flag Raising On Iwo Jima, Joe Rosenthal, 1945Flag Raising On Iwo Jima, Joe Rosenthal, 1945. The Americans needed Iwo Jima as an air base, but the Japanese had dug in. U.S. troops landed on February 19, 1945, beginning a month of fighting that claimed the lives of 6,800 Americans and 21,000 Japanese. On the fifth day of battle, the Marines captured Mount Suribachi. An American flag was quickly raised, but a commander called for a bigger one, in part to inspire his men and demoralize his opponents.

I chose this image because it captures the sacrifices military soldiers give for their country. The large size of this flag and these 4 men show the strength and power of their country. I also like the scenery you can see in the background, to get a whole story just by looking.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE COVER REVIEW

National Geographic 836This magazine cover caught my eye because, it shows jets from the air force flying over a mountain view. The jets are also popping out frame to add a 3D feel to it. I also like how you can appreciate the aircraft, along with the scenery in the background.

National Geographic 829This magazine caught my attention because, at first glace, I see naval aircraft carriers filled with aircraft and it makes me wonder where they are being taken. I also wonder how the picture was taken, maybe it was by a helicopter.

National Geographic 811This magazine caught my attention because of the extreme position the kayak is in. It makes me wonder how fast they are going, and if they are in any danger. Just by looking at the photo, I cannot tell if they will sink or slam ontop the water and continue rowing. The longer I look, the more questions I have like, how do they not hit anyone in the water? what are the 3 guys without oars doing? what’s the dude on the bottom right doing?
